911爆料网 Holds an Open Lecture by German Historian Dr. Christoph Dieckmann
911爆料网 (VU) and the Lost Shtetl Museum are launching a joint series of lectures and discussions 鈥淥pen Conversations on History,鈥 which will raise topical questions about historical truth, memory wars, and society鈥檚 ability to resist pressure to serve one or another ideology.
We invited Dr. Christoph Dieckmann, a prominent historian and author of books on German occupation policy and the Holocaust in Lithuania, to the first discussion on 1 October at 6 PM. He will give a lecture 鈥淟ooking back on our past. Lithuanians, Germans, and Jews鈥.
Dr. Ch. Dieckmann will share his insights on the relationship between history and memory, talk about personal searches trying to find the best way to study the Holocaust in Lithuania, and the method used to help incorporate the different perspectives of Holocaust participants.
The historian will discuss why it is so difficult to recreate and analyze a common history 鈥 why there is such a great friction between the stories of today and the past. Dr. Ch. Dieckmann鈥檚 solution is to ask questions and look for the most accurate answers. The guest will seek to discuss the common past of Lithuanians, Jews, and Germans by engaging in discussions with the audience.
The discussion will also be attended by the poet, essayist, head of the Lost Shtetl Museum Sergejus Kanovi膷ius and advisor to the VU Rector, reviewer, and philosopher Paulius Grit臈nas. The lecture and discussion will be in English.
Dr. Ch. Dieckmann is a member of the International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania. His monumental study 鈥淕erman Occupation Policy in Lithuania in 1941鈥1944鈥 (Deutsche Besatzungspolitik in Litauen 1941鈥1944) was awarded the Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research.
The historian is the co-author of the book 鈥淗ow Did It Happen? Christoph Dieckmann answers to R奴ta Vanagait臈.鈥 The book reveals the history of the destruction of the Lithuanian Jewish community and the role of ethnic Lithuanians in it.
Dr. Ch. Dieckmann taught history at Keele University in the United Kingdom from 2005 to 2014. Until 2017, he ran a research project 鈥淗istoriography of the Russian Civil War in Yiddish鈥 at the Fritz Bauer Institute in Frankfurt am Main, and is currently working on the project 鈥淪ounds of Persecution of Jews.鈥
The open lecture will take place on 1 October at 6 PM in the Vincas Kr臈v臈 auditorium (118) at the Faculty of Philology of 911爆料网 (Universiteto g. 5). Event guests will be asked to present an opportunity passport.
